Scholarship Guidelines

Scholarship Committee

President will appoint a three-member committee (appointed members cannot be current Board members) to address the following:

  1. Approve the scholarship class, and after the recipient has registered, authorize payment of ½ scholarship money to recipient


  2. Keep track of recipient obligations


  3. Approve auction piece provided by recipient


  4. Approve scholarship extension requests

Members have the right to appeal Scholarship Committee decisions to the Board of Directors.

Scholarship Details

  • There will be an annual scholarship drawing to be held at the January meeting.



  • The scholarship applications must be turned in by the January meeting.



  • After winning a scholarship, the recipient cannot apply for a period of three years.



  • Scholarship money can be used for one class only. No splitting of money to take more than one class.

Scholarship Recipient Guidelines

  1. Must be a member for one year.


  2. Must attend at least four monthly meetings in the year preceding the drawing.


  3. Scholarship must be used within one year of the drawing date, unless an extension is approved by the Scholarship Committee.


  4. Must give a two-hour demonstration detailing techniques and methods learned in the scholarship class.


  5. Must provide a how-to article for the newsletter detailing the techniques learned in the class.


  6. .Must provide an auction piece made from information learned during the scholarship class. Auction piece must be presented to the Scholarship Committee for approval. Auction piece should have a minimum value of $100.


  7. Must present Scholarship Committee with requested class within six months of scholarship drawing or the scholarship goes to the selected alternate.


  8. No more than half of the scholarship amount will be paid until completion of all scholarship obligations. Once the class is approved by the Scholarship Committee, the recipient can request ½ of the scholarship money before attending the school. The second half will be paid upon completion of ALL scholarship obligations.


  9. After completion of the class, the scholarship recipient has six months to complete ALL the scholarship obligations. If the obligations are not fulfilled, the money prepaid by the OBG is to be refunded back to the Guild. Those in arrears will not be able to run for or hold office in the Guild or participate in future scholarships.

Knifemaking Scholarship

One $1000 scholarship will be awarded each year. The scholarship includes tuition, meals and board, and school-required materials expense (scholarship money will be the actual amount spent up to $1000). Does not include transportation. Requests for reimbursement must be accompanied by a sales receipt, no exceptions.

One alternate will be drawn for the Knifemaking category to fill in if the member awarded the scholarship cannot attend or does not present a class for approval to the Scholarship Committee within six months.

The Knifemaking class must be approved by the Scholarship Committee (this includes classes for other types of edged items such as tomahawks, axes, etc.)

Blacksmithing Scholarship

Two $750 scholarships will be awarded each year. The scholarships will include tuition, meals and board, and school-required materials expense (scholarship money will be the actual amount spent up to $750). Does not include transportation. Requests for reimbursement must be accompanied by a sales receipt, no exceptions.

One alternate will be drawn for the Blacksmithing category to fill in if the members awarded the scholarships cannot attend or do not present a class for approval to the Scholarship Committee within six months.

Classes must be approved by the Scholarship Committee.
