The Board of Directors adopted the following on July 3, 2004
Scholarship Guidelines
Scholarship Committee
President to appoint a 3 Member committee to address the following
Will approve class after member has registered, see recipient guidelines below
Submit member extension requests to the Board of Directors
Keep track of recipient obligations
Will approve auction piece provided by recipient
Members have the right to appeal Committee decisions to the board
Appointed Committee members cannot be a current board member
Scholarship Details
Scholarships to be drawn yearly at the January meeting
Scholarships are due, by mail, no later than December 31
Absolutely no scholarship applications will be accepted after December 31. No applications will be accepted at the January meeting.
After winning a scholarship, the recipient cannot apply for a period of 3 years
Money can be used for one class only. No splitting of money to take more than one class.
Scholarship Recipient Guidelines
Must be a member for one year
Must attend at least 4 monthly meetings in the12 month period preceding the drawing.
Scholarship must be used within one year of the drawing date, unless an extension is approved by the scholarship committee.
Must give a 2-hour demonstration, with handouts, detailing what techniques and procedures were learned.
Must provide an article for the newsletter detailing the technical aspects of what the class consisted of.
Provide an auction piece made from information learned during the scholarship awarded school. Auction piece to be presented to the scholarship committee for approval. Auction piece should have a minimum value of $100.00
Must present Scholarship Committee with requested class within 6 months of scholarship drawing or the award goes to the selected alternate.
No more than half of the scholarship amount will be paid until completion of all scholarship obligations. Once class is approved by the Scholarship Committee, recipient can request one-half of the amount awarded before attending the school. The second half will be paid upon completion of all scholarship obligations.
Recipient will have 3 months from completion for class to satisfy all obligations except the auction piece that will be due within 6 months of class completion. If the obligations are not satisfied within the listed time frame recipient agrees to repay any monies paid to them by OBG.
Alternates
One alternate will be drawn for each of the two types, Knifemaking and Blacksmithing, to fill in if the member awarded the scholarship cannot attend or does not present a class for approval to the Scholarship Committee within 6 months.
Knifemaking Scholarship
Class must be approved through the scholarship committee, see Scholarship Committee heading above. Other types of edged items such as tomahawks, axes, etc must be approved by scholarship committee.
Scholarship amounts and type, Starting January 1, 2005
Knifemaking
One $1,000.00 Scholarship. This will be the actual amount spent up to $1,000.00. Amount can include meals, room and board and school supplied material expenses. Does not include transportation. Requests for reimbursement must be accompanied with a sales receipt, no exceptions.
One alternate will be drawn for the Knifemaking category.
Blacksmithing
One $750.00 scholarship funded by OBG for a committee approved class. This will cover the actual amount spent up to $750.00. Amount can include meals, room and board and school supplied material expenses. Does not include transportation. Requests for reimbursement must be accompanied with a sales receipt, no exceptions.
One $750.00 scholarship funded by OBG and the John C. Campbell Folkschool. This must be taken at the Folkschool. This will cover the actual amount spent up to $750.00. Amount can include meals, room and board and school supplied material expenses. Does not include transportation. Requests for reimbursement must be accompanied with a sales receipt, no exceptions. In the event that J.C.C.S. does not provide their part OBG will pay up to the full $750.00 amount.
One alternate will be drawn for the Blacksmithing category.
